The Type 1 diabetes retreat addresses how insulin impacts the roots of health and provides practical insight based on our extensive experience on how to optimise insulin around each root. You will receive information from an accredited medical education programme to give you the confidence you need to fully master insulin and diabetes.
The main hurdle for many is maintaining lifestyle changes once you return home. This is why, unique to all other health programmes, you will receive one year of invaluable online materials and support, accessed through the Combe Grove portal. This support includes seasonal recipes, practical demonstrations and activities to keep your body moving. As part of our Combe Grove support plan, you will receive regular follow-up consultations to help make the best of those first few months after the residential course.
To help you put the Five Roots programme knowledge into practice we also invite you to enjoy a one-year membership of the Club which features a state-of-the-art gym, a comprehensive array of classes, a selection of restorative treatments and therapies and a menu featuring seasonal and nutritious dishes.
The Type 1 Diabetes retreat integrates thorough medical evaluations and monitoring of essential health metrics, using a diverse range of therapies and treatments aimed at improving your body’s relationship with insulin.
From initial contact through to the conclusion of the programme, our qualified nutritionists are present to discuss and advise you on how to achieve balance within the Five Roots, and how this can help you manage Type 1 symptoms.
Change Your Mindset
We recognise that everyone with Type 1 diabetes requires a unique management plan and we offer principles of management based on the science of Metabolic Health. We place insulin management at the centre of the programme, and at the conclusion, you will have all the information you need to master your type of insulin and delivery device, pens or pumps. You need to change nothing other than how you view your Type 1 diabetes.
Improve Your Type 1 Journey
This Type 1 programme does not provide an endpoint. There is no pressure to be at a certain point on the last day, but you will be empowered by the knowledge to take things at your own pace and make your Type 1 journey safer, easier and more fulfilling. Many people who adopt this method feel that they have greater control over their diabetes, often for the first time in their lives. They reduce insulin use and the number of hypo’s, as well as feeling more vitalised generally.
Accuniq
The state-of-the-art Accuniq machine is a complete body composition measurement device. It provides a detailed profile of skeletal mass, muscle mass, and fat. Through one-to-one consultations, our expert nutritionists use these measurements to guide you on how you can achieve your body composition goals.
During your week-long stay, our in-house nutritionists and experienced chefs create seasonal menus that draw upon the Ketogenic Lifestyle.
As described by past attendees such as Colin, “keto has been nothing short of life-changing”, that’s why during the retreat it is outlined why this eating style is the most logical choice for Type 1 diabetes.
Ketogenic means meals are focused upon high-fat, high-protein and low-carb content.
Our food expert, Emma Porter, has Type 1 diabetes herself and will discuss how she has developed recipes Type 1 friendly recipes.
Our nutrition and dietitian team will guide you through workshops designed to enhance your understanding of Ketogenic eating, allowing you to create meaningful change through a deep appreciation of how the body processes and responds to the food we eat.
All dishes are prepared using produce grown on the Estate or sourced locally, ensuring that the freshest and most nutrient-dense food is served at every mealtime. These menus are created using seasonal ingredients and therefore change regularly.
To help promote harmony for your mind and body, your stay includes three credits that can be used for a:
- One to one consultation with a Nutritionist
- Private session with an Exercise Coach
- Treatment with a Holistic Practitioner practising in Counselling/Psychotherapy, Cranial Sacral Osteopathy, Emotional Freedom Technique, Structural Integration, Naturopath, Physiotherapy, Reflexology or Shiatsu
- Appointment with a Therapist for a body treatment.
In addition to your structured Type 1 learning, you will have a full daily programme of activities to choose from ranging from lifestyle sessions, creativity workshops and cooking demonstrations to beginner-friendly exercise classes and guided walks. This design allows you to be put in the driver’s seat so you can decide how peaceful or invigorating your experience is.
