6 Sustainable things to do for Mothers’ Day – even if you are apart
6 Sustainable things to do for Mothers’ Day – even if you are apart.
This year has proved difficult for families. A year without hugs, contact or spending time together has been the reality for many. This Mothering Sunday is a wonderful opportunity to share moments together – even if you are physically apart. In this post, we have put together a list of 6 sustainable things to do for Mothers’ Day that may mean more than gifts this year.
A give and get back book on 100% recycled paper
Some of the best gift ideas are those that can be cherished for years to come, holding memories of experiences to look back on together in the future. A ‘give and get back’ book gives you the chance to ask your mother all of the questions that you had ever wondered about, allowing her the chance to write about herself and her experiences. Write the questions and then send the book to your mother for her to answer and then she can return the book and do the same for you.
Elma van Vliet has created a book for mothers named “Mum, Tell Me” however if you may feel you would like to personalise this idea, by creating one yourself.
Try new recipes together
Whether you live together or apart, a fun way to spend time with your mother is to try a new, exciting and delicious recipe together, in person or over video call. Cooking is a great way to strengthen your bond, improve communication and spend quality time preparing food and eating together as a family. We recommend you try a nutritious, seasonal beetroot pie created by our cook Maria and tried and loved by all of Combe Grove. Furthermore, if you live locally, feel free to check out our farm shop to buy some healthy homegrown, organic vegetables for your recipes.
Make a scrapbook with a heartfelt message
Scrapbooking is a way of collecting and preserving memories, generally in the form of a book or box. Not only is this an entertaining activity for the giver, it holds a lifetime worth of beautifully decorated and thoughtfully collected memories. Scrapbooks are a great Mothering Sunday present for those who appreciate the time and effort poured into a gift just as much as the gift itself, something mothers genuinely appreciate in a gift from their child. This gift can either be created by yourself and then gifted or perhaps simply just started in readiness for continuing as an activity together.
Add to her garden – gift her spring bulbs or plant a tree
Garden inspired gifts are wonderful for mothers that are nature lovers. Gifting potted plants instead of cut flowers is a great, sustainable way to add a beautiful addition to your mother’s garden that will delight year on year and attract important pollinators such as moths, bees and butterflies.
A hand-made voucher for better times
Treat your mother with a handmade token for a future activity with flexibility and freedom. You could create a personalised voucher for an afternoon tea, treatment brunch, breakfast in bed or an overnight stay at her favourite spot. Perhaps even a voucher for a cooking class together. You can create your own personalised voucher with Canva or by hand.
Arrange a game night
A game night is a great way to spend time with your whole family, have fun and enjoy a night without TV screens. Even if you can’t see your mother in person, it is quick and easy to schedule a time, date and send out a personalised invite for a special game night. All you need to do is pick the games, choose an app and design the invites.
