Freshwater swimming: Our top outdoor spots

Our outdoor swimming pool at Combe Grove is a great place to kick back and relax in the British sunshine, and if the weather’s bad, you can always rely on our indoor swimming pool with its expansive view. However, if you fancy something a little fresher this summer, there are plenty of wild swimming hotspots just a few minutes from Combe Grove.

We have put together some of our top locations for taking your swimming alfresco.

  • Just a 15-minute drive from Combe Grove is the idyllic Stowford Manor Farm, home to Farleigh and District Swimming Club. Founded in 1933, this river swimming club it is one of the few remaining in the country. The site is equipped with changing facilities and toilets, so is the ideal place for a dip in the river before drying off in the sun with a picnic. Open from May to mid-September, it’s only £1.50 for adults and 50p for children to swim all day, perfect for a long Summer afternoon.
  • For visitors to Combe Grove who are short of time, you could try exploring at Claverton Weir, which is just a short drive down the hill. There you’ll find a 100m long weir surrounded by meadows and stretches of greenery. There’s both shallow and deeper paddling available too.
  • Tellisford near Frome is our final recommendation, and what an excellent place for swimming it is. You’ll find a large weir pool varying from one metre to three in depth, surrounded by leafy green trees. This is just a little further by car from Farleigh but likely to be less busy, although do note that there are no facilities available.

Of course, if wild swimming isn’t your thing, Combe Grove’s outdoor pool is open throughout the summer months, and at 26 degrees how could you say no to a pool with a view.
