The Combe Grove Estate came under the guardianship of the Elmhurst Foundation Charitable Trust in March 2017 with 3 principle aims to practice and increase knowledge in the field of health and wellbeing, create 90 high-quality enhanced apprenticeships and to share facilities and expertise for the benefit of the local community.

Our stunning location informs all that we do. Located within 70 acres of woodland and meadow, in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in Bath. The Team combines the latest medical research with the restorative power of nature to help those who pass through the Estate to reconnect with the primary needs of mind and body and leave with a greater sense of wellness, increased vitality and a sense of restored calm.

Horticultural Level 2 Apprentice

About the role

Due to the growth of our projects and the development of the Team we are actively recruiting for a Level 2 Horticulture Apprentice to join our amazing team in partnership with our chosen training provider who are a centre of excellence.

You will be reporting to the dynamic and high-performing Estates Management Team of dedicated and driven Team Leaders who are experts in their field and will mentor you through your learning journey.

This role is based within the Horticulture Team who cultivate our no dig Kitchen Garden producing the nutrient rich vegetables used in the meals that are created by our chefs and nutritionists. The team care for the medicinal herb garden and orchard of heritage fruit trees, edible hedge and the development of a nut orchard. With this exciting role you will learn and develop your botanical knowledge and skills to the highest standard.

The role involves, but is not limited to:

  • Cultivating and maintaining the grounds and gardens following organic, permaculture and no dig models
  • Supporting a range of horticultural activities on the Estate and Kitchen Garden
  • Producing plants and vegetables for consumption and as well as creating displays of  high horticultural and botanical standards

Highly motivated with a dedication to continued personal growth and a passion for the natural world, as well as sharing knowledge to improve health and wellbeing, you will also have experience applying your passion for horticulture in your ongoing journey of continued development.

You must be consistent and dependable with a commitment to maintaining high standards.

You will play a vital role in cultivating the produce used to create the nutritious food at Combe Grove as well as caring for and maintaining the various botanical habitats on the Estate.

You must have strong time management skills, demonstrating reliability and punctuality.

You will have English and Maths GCSEs at grade 4 or above.

Prior to enrolment with the apprenticeship training provider, you will undertake an internship to familiarise yourself with Combe Grove and all that we do, our land, food and people.

With this varied and exciting role, you will study towards a Level 2 Apprenticeship in Horticulture with our chosen training provider. You will have 6 hours paid study time each week to focus on your off the job learning. This Apprenticeship includes Membership of the Chartered Institute of Horticulturists and the Royal Horticulture Society.

Performance-related salary increases will apply to this apprenticeship upon successful completion of each stage as follows

Internship – up to £21,750

Enrolment Entry salary – for the first 3 months from enrolment £14,000

Probation Review – for the remaining 9 months of year 1 £14,500

Year 2 – following successful completion of year 1, up to £21,750

Gateway – 3 months to prepare for the End Point Assessment £22,750

Combe Grove Career Coaching – 3 months of career coaching £24,000

Monday to Friday 07.00-15.30 subject to seasonal change. Total hours 40 per week exclusive of breaks. This includes the designated 6 hours study time every week and some weekend working as per the team rota.

We will arrange paid work placements for you with our strategic business partners to experience other companies and enhance your learning. We also arrange volunteering and community days which all Apprentices attend together to widen your experience.

Following successful completion of your End Point Assessment you will be supported in career coaching and development so that you are in the most advanced position to compete for the best roles in the industry on completion of your apprenticeship.

In addition, you will receive the following qualifications and training:

  • First Aid
  • PA licenses

You will be required to complete and upload relevant evidence to the appropriate e-portfolio system to document your progress and maintain records for off-the-job training.

Future Prospects

Once qualified you will be in an advanced position to progress into a variety of roles on your career path such as Horticulture Supervisor Apprenticeship, Assistant Gardener or Plant Care Technician.

Horticultural Level 2 Apprentice

This Apprenticeship will be carried out over 28 months comprising of the in-learning and Gateway periods. Prior to enrolment, the successful candidate will undertake an internship up to familiarise yourself with Combe Grove our land, food and people.

Upon successful completion of the apprenticeship we provide an additional 3 months of career coaching and support with job searches so that you are in the strongest position to complete for the best jobs in the industry.
